HALIFAX - September 27, 2000 - Greater Halifax Partnership investor 360networks today celebrated the completion of its new Canadian landing site for 360atlantic, its transatlantic fibre optic network. The $80 million cable landing station located in Greater Halifax will link points in Canada, the United States, England and Ireland, and will enter commercial service in the first quarter of 2001.
The completion of 360networks cable landing station in Halifax strengthens our infrastructure as we continue to become more and more connected to our partners around the world, said Michael MacDonald, President and CEO of the Greater Halifax Partnership. With this fibre optic cable in place, Halifax can become the Grand Central Station of telecommunications, offering businesses unprecedented access to a world-class telecommunications infrastructure.
360networks announced Halifaxs selection as the Canadian landing site for 360atlantic in January of this year. The new high-speed, high-capacity link will be part of a global fibre optic communications network, designed to serve the increasing bandwidth demands of international telecommunications service providers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and large corporations with global enterprise networks.
In cooperation with the Government of Nova Scotia, the Greater Halifax Partnership and the Halifax Regional Municipality, we have completed a significant project that will enable Halifax to become a major telecommunications gateway between Europe and North America, said Patrick Coughlan, Country Manager of Ireland at 360networks.
The new 25,000 square foot cable landing station is located on a 16 hectare (40-acre) parcel of land in Halifax. It houses network switching equipment, office space, three electrical generators and secure space where telecommunications and data communications companies can connect their regional networks and applications to 360networks long-haul network.
