| ALBERTA - ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
A strong energy sector, stronger consumer demand and increased exports will fuel Alberta's growth this year. In 2000, economic growth is forecast at 4.0% for Alberta compared to 3.1% for Canada. In 1999, employment posted a healthy 2.5% increase and is forecast to strengthen
slightly in 2000 to 3%.
Retail sales grew considerably during the second half of the year and posted a 4.3% increase. In 2000, retail sales are expected to remain strong and growth is forecast at 4.8%. Housing starts declined by 7% in 1999 in comparison to a peak in 1998 and the housing outlook for 2000 is mixed. Strong economic conditions will increase the demand for new housing, but oversupply in some markets could restrain the number of starts. |
