The Province of New Brunswick has the most advanced telecommunication system in North America. NB Tel is the major telecommunications supplier in Fredericton and throughout the province. In 1993, NB Tel completed Canada's first fully digital provincial switching network and is aggressively involved in an extensive fibre-optics program. Other "firsts" for NB Tel include the launch of ISDN, a full scale integrated services digital network (NB Tel is the first telephone company in Canada to go 100% digital) and the introduction of 800-plus service, community calling and call management services, including call displays, desktop multimedia communications and CallMall (display-based marketing). 

NB Tel's introduction of TalkMail, a universal voice E-mail service provided to residential and single-line business customers along with their basic telephone service, is the world's first. NB Tel also works closely with the provincial government to establish New Brunswick as a telemarketing centre for Canada. 

Currently, there are two major backbone telecommunication networks servicing the province, both with a hub in Fredericton. One is a main packet switching network developed by the Provincial Department of Supply and Services. This network integrates various areas of the Province with the backbone network. The second network is through the University of New Brunswick and it consists of a campus network, public access through modems and other research networks. A third network is currently being established at the University of New Brunswick which will link provincial research and development companies with national and international sources. In addition, there are a number of branch offices of national companies within the city extensively using voice and data networks.
